Sadisu Mohammed popularly known as Teacher Yekondunu, was an Icon in the Nupe Film industry. He was
born and brought up in Minna, Niger State. His creative talent in entertainment began back in his days in secondary school, where he used to narrate stories to his mates, write article, poems, creative stories and display of highly rated dramatic eloquence.
After his secondary education, his passion for entertainment particularly filmmaking, possessed him like an obsession. He took it a responsibility to touch the lives of others through this medium and he didn’t relent in doing so, until the moment he was laid down six fit.
He was a graduate of English language, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Niger State. Studied film making at Malaysia Film Academy and till he died, he was a lecturer in the aforementioned University, where he was retained after his graduation.
He was a pioneer member of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Niger State Chapter, pioneer Chairman, Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Niger State Chapter, one of the initiators of the popular Sibombo traditional dance group in Niger State and the founder of EYEKONDUNU Film Academy, located in Minna, Niger State, Nigeria. He was a published writer (Inaudible Noise), performing poet, teacher, preacher, motivational speaker, veteran actor (Stage and Screen), film producer/ director, loving husband, a well rated oratorian and general entertainment consultant.
Throughout his career and existence on earth, he produced and directed over fifty movies, both in English and Nupe. The history of entertainment in Niger State cannot be well told, without the mention of his remarkable contributions in the industry. He had a title called “Sarkinwasa”, which literally means, ‘King of Entertainment’. Emphatically speaking, his death has rendered hundreds of people jobless; because in the strict sense of it, he was a massive employer of labour.
Before Sadisu Mohammed left us, he just concluded a film titled; ‘Yikantsozhi’, written by a renowned writer/Director (C B Josef). This movie was ready for distribution before he died. According to reliable sources, this was one of the best job he had ever done, employing over a hundred casts who were facing the camera for the first time in their lives and he was hoping to make a fortune out of it, but fate had a different plan for him.
His life was a rare case of a man; who had a dream that didn’t make sense to the people around him, but he courageously nurtured this dream from his childhood to his early forties…and then, success became his middle name. He created a trademark, established a film market, built a formidable crew that together with him, set a pace in the industry and gave everyone reasons to celebrate him. His remarkable success became a force to be reckoned with, as he broke the jinx of perspective truth and set a standard for others to follow.
An icon like Sadisu Mohammed can never, ever be replaced. If we had the chance, we would ask God to bring him back, because he hadn’t only taught us so much; but because we were still learning from him, before the cold hands of death took him away from us. He was indeed a mentor of mentors, director of directors, oratorian of oratorians, writer of writers…words alone cannot say it all, but all I can say right now, is that God should accept his soul in heaven.
Good night Sadisu Mohammed (Teacher Yekondunu), the only Sarkinwasa that existed in your time. We shall always put to practice; what we learnt from you yesterday…and when tomorrow comes; we will remember you, for your great impacts in the world you left behind.
