David Sweat, one of two killers who
eluded capture for three weeks after escaping a maximum security prison in New
York last month, was released from a hospital Sunday and returned to prison,
authorities said.
Sweat, 35, was released from Albany
Medical Center and sent to the Five Points Correctional Facility in Romulus,
the state Corrections Department said in a statement. The department declined
to reveal details about Sweat's transportation from the hospital to Five Points.
Sweat, who will be placed on active
suicide watch, fled the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, N.Y., on
June 6. He and escapee Richard Matt eluded capture in the deep forests of
Northern New York State for three weeks.
Matt was fatally shot by U.S. Border
Patrol officers nine days ago. Sweat was captured by New York state troopers
two days later.
Five Points Correctional Facility
currently houses 1,294 inmates and has 669 employees, including 511 security
staff.
